DETAILED ITINERARY FOR MOROCCO'S AVIAN DIVERSITY: 15-DAY BIRDING ADVENTURE

DAY 1: MARRAKECH TO EL JADIDA

The birdwatching tour begins with a drive from any meeting point in Marrakech, such as Marrakech airport or the hotel, to El Jadida City. During the journey, it is possible to see several birds, including the Spotless Starling, Calandra Lark, Cattle Egret, Crested Lark, White Stork, and Common Bulbul. Overnight accommodation is provided in El Jadida hotel, including dinner and breakfast.

DAY 2: CASABLANCA – RABAT FROM EL JADIDA

The day starts with birdwatching around El Jadida City to see the Elusive Small Buttonquail, Sardinian Warbler, Reed Rempture Warbler, and Zitting Cisticola. Next, we continue to Rabat City, where dinner, accommodation, and breakfast are provided.

DAY 3: FROM RABAT – ZAERS FOREST – SIDI BOUGHABA – BACK TO RABAT

The day begins with a trip to the Zaers Forest to observe the Double-spurred Francolin, Black Crowned Tchagra, Lark-shouldered Kite, Wood Pigeon, Green Finch, Serin, Barbary Partridge, and Moussier’s Redstart. We continue to the Lake of Sidi Boughaba to see the Red-knobbed Coot, Marbled Duck, and White-headed Duck. We return to Rabat City for overnight accommodation, dinner, and breakfast.

DAY 4: FROM RABAT – MEDJA ZERGA – BACK TO RABAT

The day starts with a drive to Medja Zerga, where we can observe the Greenshank, Redshank, Lingering Ducks, and Flamingos. We visit the marches to observe the Marsh Owl and later proceed to the beach to watch the Balearic Shearwater. Overnight accommodation, dinner, and breakfast are provided in Rabat City.

DAY 5: FROM RABAT – AZROU TO ZAIDA

The day starts with a drive to Azrou City to see the Kestrel. Next, we proceed to the Middle Atlas to observe the Ruddy Shelduck and Levaillant’s Woodpecker. In the cedar forests, we look out for Wood Lark, Firecrest, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Coal Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker, and Barbary Apes. Overnight accommodation, dinner, and breakfast are provided in Zaida hotel.

DAY 6: ZAIDA TO MERZOUGA DESERT

The day starts early with birdwatching around Zaida, where we can see Thekla Lark, Rock Doves, and Short-toed Larks. We then proceed to the desert with stops along the way to observe the Eurasian Crag-Martin, Desert Lark, Black Wheatear, Black Crowned Wheatear. In Ziz Valley, we can observe House Bulting and Rock Sparrow. Overnight accommodation, dinner, and breakfast are provided in Merzouga hotel.

DAY 7: MERZOUGA TO ERG CHEBBI DUNES – BACK TO MERZOUGA

On Day 7 of your Morocco birdwatching tour, you will drive through the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi for birdwatching. You will have the chance to spot some little birds as well as some angry birds, such as the Brown-necked raven, Hopoe lark, Desert sparrow, Desert warbler, and Fulvous babbler. You will also enjoy the stark desert landscapes. In the evening, you will spend an unforgettable night in a luxury camp, where you will have dinner, accommodation, and breakfast.

DAY 8:  FROM  MERZOUGA  TO RISSANI  BACK  TO MERZOUGA

On Day 8, you will see some more bird species, including the Spotted sandgrouse, Crowned sandgrouse, Lanner falcon, Spectacled warblers, Blue cheeked bee-eater, Trumpter finch, Grey shrike, and Egyptian nightjar. You will then return to Merzouga and spend the night in a hotel, where you will have dinner, accommodation, and breakfast.

DAY  9 : MERZOUGA –  GALMIMA  TO BOUMALNE  DADES

On Day 9, you will continue to one of the best birdwatching places, the Tagdilt track in Boumalne city. Here, you will have the opportunity to spot some rare bird species, such as the Eagle owl, Cream coloured courser, Hoopoe lark, Thick-billed lark, Sandgrouse, Desert lark, and Black wheatears. You will also visit some caves where nomads live. In the evening, you will have dinner, accommodation, and breakfast in Boumalne Dades hotel.

DAY 10 : FROM BOUMALNE DADES –  TAGDIL TRACK TO OUARZAZATE

On Day 10, you will visit the Tagdilt track again and then continue to the Mansour eddahbi Barrage, where you should be able to spot some bird species, such as the Ruddy sheldouk, Black Winged stilts, Marbled ducks, Cormorants, Herons, Olivacaus warbler, and some waders. You will also visit the Dades gorges where a family of nomads live. In the evening, you will have dinner and accommodation in Ouarzazate hotel.

DAY 11 : SOUS VALLEY – AGADIR FROM OUARZAZATE

On Day 11, you will drive to Souss valley, where you will have the opportunity to spot some bird species, including the Black crowned tchagra, House bunting, Various doves, Spanish sparrow, Desert lark, and Maghribe wheatear. You will then continue to Taroudant city, where you can watch Barn swallow and Pallid swifts. In the evening, you will have accommodation in Agadir hotel.

DAY 12 : CAP RHIR – TAMRI ESTUARY  FROM  AGADIR

On Day 12, you will start your day by birdwatching at Agadir beach and Cap ghir, where you should be able to spot Black-backed gulls of two races, Yellow-legged gulls, and Audouin’s gulls. You will then continue to Tamri for watching Black ibis and some ducks. In the evening, you will have dinner, accommodation, and breakfast in Agadir hotel.

DAY 13 : OUED MASSA – OUED SOUSS  FROM AGADIR

On Day 13, you will visit Oued Massa, one of the best places for birdwatching in Morocco, where you should be able to spot Black-crowned tchagra, Cormorants, Mossier’s redstart, Marbled duck, some Doves, Sardinian warbler, and Brown-throated martin. You will then continue to Oued Souss, where you will have a good birdwatching experience with Flamingos, roosting gulls, and terns. In the evening, you will have accommodation, dinner, and breakfast in Agadir hotel.

DAY 14 : FROM  AGADIR  TO  MARRAKECH

Firstly, we will travel back to Marrakech with some stops along the way to see various species of birds. We plan to arrive in Marrakech in the evening, where we will check into our hotel and relax for a bit. Secondly, we will spend the evening exploring some of Marrakech’s famous tourist attractions, such as Jemaa-el-fena, the Marrakech souk (traditional market), and the old city of Marrakech. We will take in the sights and sounds of this vibrant city, and maybe even sample some delicious local cuisine.

DAY 15:  MARRAKECH BIRDING TIME OF DAY

On Day 15, we will devote the entire day to birding around Marrakech. We will search for different species of birds in various habitats, including wetlands, desert, and mountains. With luck, we may spot some of the more rare and elusive species that call this area home. Finally, we will end the day with a delicious dinner and overnight accommodation in our Marrakech hotel. On the last day, we will either transfer you back to Marrakech airport or to your hotel, depending on your travel plans.
