DETAILED ITINERARY FOR 12-DAY MOROCCO BIRDING ADVENTURE FROM RABAT TO DESERT TO HIGH ATLAS AND MARRAKECH

DAY 1: RABAT

Our Morocco birding journey starts in the vibrant city of Rabat, where we visit the renowned Sidi Boughaba National Park. Here, we'll observe rare species like the Red-knobbed Coot, White-headed Duck, and Marbled Duck in the park's tranquil wetlands. Keep an eye out for Purple Swamphen or Squacco Heron lurking in the reeds, while the skies may reveal a soaring Western Marsh Harrier, a true sight to behold as we explore this peaceful haven for birdlife.

DAY 2: RABAT TO AZROU

Our second day takes us to the cork oak forests of the Zaër region, just outside of Rabat. This beautiful area is home to a variety of species, including the elusive Barbary Partridge and Double-spurred Francolin. We also have the chance to spot European Turtle Doves, Common Bulbul, African Chaffinch, and African Blue Tit, as well as the Black-crowned Tchagra. After this rewarding birding experience, we continue eastward, driving towards the forests of Ifrane. In these dense woodlands, we search for forest species like Levaillant’s Woodpecker, Atlas Pied Flycatcher, Short-toed Treecreeper, Eurasian Nuthatch, and Firecrest, creating the perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in Morocco's rich birdlife.

DAY 3: AZROU TO MIDELT

On Day 3, we venture into the Cedar forest near Azrou, a region renowned for its healthy population of Barbary Macaque, one of Morocco's most charming residents. We continue our journey south through one of the tour's most scenic landscapes—high-altitude plains dotted with small lagoons. In these serene settings, we may observe Ferruginous Shelducks and the majestic Atlas Long-legged Buzzard soaring above the plains. As we approach the village of Zaida, we will seek the rare DuPont’s Lark and Thick-billed Lark, two elusive species found in these remote areas.

DAY 4: MIDELT TO MERZOUGA

Our fourth day takes us into the stunning High Atlas Mountains, with multiple stops along the way to search for a variety of passerine species. Look for the Moroccan White Wagtail, Tristram’s Warbler, and Isabelline Warbler, as well as the Western Orphean Warbler and Moussier’s Redstart. After crossing the mountains, we arrive near Er Rachidia, where we explore a wadi and search for Streaked Scrub Warbler, Bar-tailed Lark, and Maghreb Larks. The day ends with a visit to Erg Chebbi, Morocco's largest dune system, where the sight of these vast dunes bathed in the warm evening light will leave an unforgettable impression.

DAY 5: MERZOUGA

Day 5 is a highlight of the tour as we explore the wildest parts of the Merzouga desert in a 4×4 vehicle, taking us close to the Algerian border in search of two highly sought-after species: the Houbara Bustard and Desert Sparrow. During our adventure, we will also encounter a range of other desert species, including Crowned Sandgrouse, Spotted Sandgrouse, Greater Hoopoe Lark, and the African Desert Warbler. After a delicious lunch, we will visit a nearby wadi, where we will search for Desert Warbler, Bar-tailed Lark, and Greater Hoopoe Lark. This day promises to be a true highlight of the trip, with incredible birdwatching and unique landscapes.

DAY 6: MERZOUGA TO BOUMALNE DADES

After bidding farewell to Merzouga, we journey towards Boumalne Dades, making stops along the way at various wadis and palm forests. These regions are home to species such as Streaked Scrub Warbler, Fulvous Babbler, and the African Desert Warbler. We then head towards the famous Tagdilt Track, a renowned birdwatching site where we may spot Cream-colored Courser, Thick-billed Lark, Greater Hoopoe Lark, Temminck’s Lark, Desert Lark, Bar-tailed Lark, Desert Wheatear, and Red-rumped Wheatear, among many others. This area is a birdwatcher's paradise and a key highlight of the tour.

DAY 7: BOUMALNE DADES TO OUARZAZATE

Today, we return to Tagdilt Track in search of any species we may have missed during our previous visit. Following breakfast, we continue our journey to Ouarzazate, where we visit the Ouarzazate reservoir. This area attracts large numbers of waterfowl, including the Marbled Duck and Ruddy Shelduck. The reservoir also draws a variety of migrating songbirds and hosts many resident species like Fulvous Chatterer, Laughing Dove, Lanner Falcon, Long-legged Buzzard, and numerous wheatears and larks.

DAY 8: OUARZAZATE TO AGADIR

Our birding adventure continues with a long drive to Agadir, during which we make several strategic stops. We will look for species like the Lanner Falcon, Maghreb Wheatear, Tristram’s Warbler, Moussier’s Redstart, and migrating passerines. Along the way, we pass through extensive argan forests, where we may spot Black-winged Kite, Thekla Lark, Red-rumped Swallow, Black-crowned Tchagra, and Spanish Sparrow, among others. This is a great opportunity to see a variety of species in diverse habitats.

DAY 9: AGADIR

On Day 9, we visit Souss-Massa National Park, one of Morocco's best-preserved wetlands and a paradise for birdwatching. Along the Massa River, we can observe a range of species, including Black-crowned Tchagra, Plain Martin, Squacco Heron, Marbled Duck, and Moustached Warbler. In the afternoon, we head to the Oued Souss, located closer to the city, where we will search for the Red-necked Nightjar, which is found here year-round.

DAY 10: TAMRI

In the morning, we visit the coastal town of Tamri, where a colony of critically endangered Northern Bald Ibis is often seen foraging for food. This is one of the best places to view these remarkable birds in the wild. The mouth of the Tamri River is another prime birdwatching location, where we can spot a variety of waterbirds. The surrounding banana plantations act as a magnet for migrating birds, including Western Orphean Warbler, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, Eurasian Wryneck, Sedge Warbler, and Common Grasshopper Warbler. Nearby, we also have the chance to observe a resident pair of Barbary Falcons. From Cape Rhir, we can watch seabirds in migration as they pass by.

DAY 11: OUKAÏMEDEN

On Day 11, we travel to the Atlas Mountains, where we visit the Oukaïmeden region, home to peaks over 4,000 meters. Here, we look for the elusive Crimson-winged Finch, which frequents snow-free clearings in search of food. Other species of interest in this area include Barbary Partridge, Levaillant’s Woodpecker, Horned Lark, Moussier’s Redstart, Alpine Accentor, Yellow-billed Chough, and Rock Sparrow. In recent years, there have been regular sightings of Bearded Vultures, adding to the allure of this stunning mountain landscape.

DAY 12: MARRAKESH AND DEPARTURE

On the final day of the tour, we visit some of Marrakesh’s most iconic sites, such as the Djemaa el Fna Plaza and the largest traditional market in Morocco, where we will observe species typical of this region, including Garden Bulbul, House Bunting, and Little Swift. After a final birdwatching opportunity in this vibrant city, we will drop you off at the airport for your departure, marking the end of a memorable and enriching Morocco birding adventure.
